Pécs meeting (V): The treasure box, next stop Kassel

Pécs meeting (IV): Activities and visits

Our Hungarian colleagues had prepared a great programme of activities and visits.  There was time to do some cooking, to recreate some Pécs monuments using bottle caps...
We could also visit the Zsolnay centre, the site of the legend (Nagyharsany) and many other places in and around Pécs

You can see most of these activities and visits in this album

Pécs meeting (III): Comics

The different countries brought their comic versions of the Hungarian legend.  Everybody did a great job as you can see in this comic gallery.

In this presentation we can see the booket made by the Hungarian school with all the comics:

Pécs meeting (II): The Hungarian legend

One of the highlights of the Pécs meeting was the performance of the legend "The Witch and the Devil".  You can see some pictures of the play in this link

Pécs meeting (I): Teachers, students and families

Our first project meeting took place in Pécs from the 14th to the 18th of November.  In this picture you can see most of the teachers and students involved in the project.

In this album you can see teachers, students and families who participated in the Hungarian meeting.

Our project: What do we know about each other? Answers for the Questionnaire

These are the answers to the questionnaire our students answered these previous months (Data collected from 133 students from 5 different countries)

1.  Three questions with yes/no answer:
  • Have you ever met a person from the countries involved in the project?
  • Have you ever visited one of the countries involved in the project?
  • Have you ever talked to a person from these countries?
The chart shows that about 2/3rds of our students had had some contact with some of the other countries involved in the project (you may click on the chart to make it bigger).

2.  Which of these countries have you visited?  /  have you met or talked to someone from?

Austria and Germany are the countries which have been most visited by our students:  43 people had been to Germany or had met a German person.  33 people had been to Austria or had met someone for that country.  We guess that may be because several countries participating in the project are geographically close to these two countries.

3.  Which language did you use to communicate?
We can see that most people (75) used English as a communication language and a significant number (17) used German too.  The use of other languages for international communication was very small.

4. Meals that are typical from these countries

In the chart we can see the best known food from the countries involved in the project.  We can see that there is food from almost all the countries (the Czech Republic is our hidden gem).

From the data we collected our hearty European meal would consist of:
  • Starter:  A Hungarian goulash soup or some Spanish paella.
  • Main course:  German sausages or Turkish kebab or some Spanish tortilla
  • Dessert:  Austrian cakes (Sachertorte, Apfelstrudel...) or Belgian Chocolates
There would be a Czech surprise somewhere there...

Now it's time to get to know one another... and enjoy the differences!!!

Sunday, 25th November 2012

These are the results of the Austrian questionnaire. Data collected from 89 students.

In Hungary the students started to get to know each other, the differences and our common interests.

Szervusztok

A scary Halloween-greeting from class 5c in Kassel.

Unfortunately, we're not with you right now, but we're very much looking forward to welcoming you here in Kassel in 2013.
Hopefully you're having a lot of fun and are happy with the outcomes of this meeting.

Hamarosan találkozunk!

Class 5c & Noah

P.S.: If you want to learn the song that we're currently singing, you can check out the following two clips on youtube and practice. We've had a lot of fun with this song and put together a karaoke version and recorded our own version. If you rehearse a little bit at home, in front of the computer and get to know the song, we can sing it together when you come visit us in Germany. Have fun!!!

The Witch and the Devil (Hungarian legend)

Anyone who has ever seen the hill of Nagyharsány is never going to forget its huge sugar-loaf top. This top is actually a bare limestone rock which looks like a field with ploughed deep furrows.
Who could have ploughed these deep furrows into the hard rocks? Was it magic or is this place cursed?

Once upon a time there lived an old witch at the foot of Harsányi hill. She had a beautiful stepdaughter.  By the time she got fifteen her beauty had been well-known far away.  One day the devil visited the witch and when he saw her stepdaughter, he fell in love with her.

The devil said to the witch: "I want to marry your daughter!” The witch was frightened, because she really loved her stepdaughter, and didn’t want the devil to marry her.
She answered: "I can’t give her to anyone! Prove me that you deserve her! She will be yours if you plough the Harsányi hill until sunrise, when the rooster crows. If you can’t do it, then you have to go back to hell!"

The devil liked the offer. He couldn’t wait for the night to come. He put thirteen magical goats in front of his plough and began ploughing. The witch was calm for a while, because she was sure that even the devil can’t plough the hard rocks. But when she looked out of the window after midnight, the devil was getting closer to the top of the hill and almost finished the ploughing.

The witch was worried about her daughter as she was very scared that the devil could do what is impossible. She had a brilliant idea. She climbed into the hen house, where the hens and roosters were still asleep, because sunrise was far away. The witch began crowing loudly, and all the roosters woke up.

There were only a few furrows for the devil to plough and then he heard a rooster crowing, then another, then another, and soon all the roosters were crowing. The devil was very angry because he couldn’t marry the girl. He ran down the hill with his firing magical goats. When he reached the bottom of the hill, he stamped his foot and disappeared into hell with his goats. In that place the hot spring water of Harkany gushed out.

That’s how the tricky witch outsmarted the devil.

Support team in Hungary

Hello everyone,
The Hungarian Comenius support team also had their first meeting. As you can see in the photos taken in the first meeting there are a lot of interested teachers in Mezoszel. We are looking forward to working with you and meeting some of you in Pecs in November.

Wednesday, 8 August 2012

Hello everyone,

this is a picture from our first Comenius meeting since we've gotten the OK. Hopefully y'all are doing well and enjoyed your summer (unfortunately, German summer cannot really be called summer anymore, since you'd need a couple of days of sun for that).

We're thrilled that everything worked out for us, but also sad that England and Sweden couldn't be part of our project.

Hope to see you very soon.

Cheers,

the German "Fairy Talers"!
